Welcome

This is a space for young people interested in sharing and learning around food issues. This is but the beginning of a conversation, an attempt to capture so many exciting thoughts and activities being undertaken across our communities. Tell us about them!

Food is transformative. How food is produced, consumed, acquired and enjoyed transforms communities, cultures, and economies. The food system feeds us, but also perpetuates injustice, environmental degradation and health disparities. We have the power to develop alternatives- to activate ourselves and our communities in creating a system that sustains.

What are you doing? What do you want to see changed?

Hi everybody,

Since our last meeting, I have been involved with Youth Challenge International in the Volunteer Advisory Council as leader for Food Security. I am also currently working on a project involving the art of dance to raise awareness about Food issues, it's called the Global harvest dance project. A project to re-connect with the land, food, and the farmers who grow the food. My dream one day is to have it coincide with Harvest fairs and have a big celebration of good food.

I'm working on a website sponsored by Taking It Global feel free to check it out

In addition, I am also arranging meetings with the administrators at my university to get them on board with LFP.. I have a meeting with one soon.

every Tuesday, my group and I still have our soup kitchen so that's been going great although school is getting hectic. If anyone is interested in joining the food security initiative please add your self as a member

Cheers
Tammara

Thanks for putting this up Ana! Hopefully people will use it as it's a great networking/learning opportunity for us all.

I'm a bit 'blog'-unsavvy, so is there something I need to do to start a new post or do we only reply to the ones you post? Also, do I need to become a member?

Finally, I'd like to announce to anyone using this blog that I'm organizing a conference on food sustainability (as I mentioned when many of us met last year). I don't want to take up too much space here so I'll just say that it's happening at U of T on Sat. March 17th 9am-5pm. $10/students. It would be great to see you all out! www.therealdirt.ca has all the info you'll need.

Hi everyone,
I just wanted to report back on the Real Dirt on Food Conference, as it happened this weekend (Sat.)

I think it was a big success. The speakers were varied and engaging, the food was yummy, and we tried to make it as sustainable as possible.

We've had lots of positive feedback so far. The response has been SO good in fact, that we're hoping to organize it again for next year!

We're hoping to transform our website, www.therealdirt.ca, into more of a forum for student food activism so I'd encourage you all to check it out in the coming weeks for these changes. If you're interested in being more involved in food activism at your school, then please email me and I'll make sure you're informed about whatever activism meetings we hold in the coming months. (emily.vanhalem@gmail.com). I also hope to post some pics on the website in the next few days so stay tuned for that.

Did anyone here make it to the conference? I know Tammara did. I'd love to receive feedback from you if you were there.

For those who didn't make it, we'll be uploading the audio and video files of some of the sessions for you to download. That should be up this week too!
