Great to hear from you!

It's nice to get caught up on the many things you're up to- Emily, the conference sounds amazing, Tammara- the harvest dance project sounds really innovative, please keep us updated.

I'm fairly new to this technology, but am interested in how we can use it to keep us connected and to support our respective livelihood projects. An idea I have is setting up a 'commons' page where people can post resources or supports they need or have to offer (eg. Emily, do you need volunteers for the conference? you could post a request. Or Meredith, do you have any cool food curriculum you could share?) there just might the 'right' person out there to help us all out in our food systems work. Just an idea, i'm not sure yet how it would work, but let me know what you think...

In the meanwhile, I wanted to let you all know about the COG growing up organic conference. It's happening February 17th, 2007 in Toronto: http://www.cog.ca/. If anyone's interested in attending, let me know- I'm planning on being there.

be well,
ana

Let's talk about FOOD

I'm excited to see this blog up and running - this is a great forum for us to keep up with all of the amazing work that is being done in the food community and beyond.

Tammara I love your idea of incorporating food and dance and I would be interested to see how it could be incorporated into some of the work I am doing in schools.

I have been busy building the Field to Table Schools program and I am always looking for new and exciting ways of engaging youth of all ages.

An event that might be of interest but would take people south of the border is the upcoming conference From Cafeterias to Capitol Hill: Growing Healthy Kids, Farms and Communities in Baltimore. For more information check out http://www.foodsecurity.org/2007conf/

This event falls on the same date of Emily's amazing Real Dirt event but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Youth Challenge International - Food Security

Hi everybody,Since our last meeting, I have been involved with Youth Challenge International in the Volunteer Advisory Council as leader for Food Security. I am also currently working on a project involving the art of dance to raise awareness about Food issues, it's called the Global harvest dance project. A project to re-connect with the land, food, and the farmers who grow the food. My dream one day is to have it coincide with Harvest fairs and have a big celebration of good food.

I'm working on a website sponsored by Taking It Global feel free to check it out http://projects.takingitglobal.org/yci-foodsecurity In addition, I am also arranging meetings with the administrators at my university to get them on board with LFP.. I have a meeting with one soon.every Tuesday, my group and I still have our soup kitchen so that's been going great although school is getting hectic. If anyone is interested in joining the food security initiative please add your self as a member.

CheersTammara

Conference on Food Sustainability

From Emily Van Halem

Thanks for putting this up Ana! Hopefully people will use it as it's a great networking/learning opportunity for us all. I'm a bit 'blog'-unsavvy, so is there something I need to do to start a new post or do we only reply to the ones you post? Also, do I need to become a member? Finally, I'd like to announce to anyone using this blog that I'm organizing a conference on food sustainability (as I mentioned when many of us met last year). I don't want to take up too much space here so I'll just say that it's happening at U of T on Sat. March 17th 9am-5pm. $10/students. It would be great to see you all out! http://www.therealdirt.ca has all the info you'll need.

Welcome

This is a space for young people interested in sharing and learning around food issues. This is but the beginning of a conversation, an attempt to capture so many exciting thoughts and activities being undertaken across our communities. Tell us about them!

Food is transformative. How food is produced, consumed, acquired and enjoyed transforms communities, cultures, and economies. The food system feeds us, but also perpetuates injustice, environmental degradation and health disparities. We have the power to develop alternatives- to activate ourselves and our communities in creating a system that sustains.

What are you doing? What do you want to see changed?
